Over 34 years in their family home, Johnny and his wife have seen it grow and evolve alongside them. CRAFT was invited to see the results of their recent renovation, where a once-traditional kitchen and living area has been transformed into a sleek, modern space.

Johnny’s professional background in wood and his deep appreciation for natural materials shaped every aspect of this transformation, brought to life with Provence flooring.

With a background in the high-end, large-scale post-and-beam wood industry, Johnny brought his keen eye for craftsmanship and appreciation for natural materials to his personal home renovation.

The result is well-executed reno that marries clean lines, the timeless beauty of natural wood, and a dedication to simplicity.

Behind the scenes in the making of a PROVENCE floor:

Provence floors are made from CRAFT Premium Grade white oak, specially selected to limit excessive colour variation and establish the optimal balance between the wood’s natural characteristics and clear surfaces.

Provence floors acquire their elegant light brown tones from a natural fuming process that has been used by wood artisans for centuries. This natural aging process imparts a beautifully rich patina.

For all its natural good looks, Provence is made with North American White Oak and a 100% certified-sustainable Canadian Spruce wood core, and Red List Free Glues and Coatings. Review our higher standards.

The home’s design reflects Johnny’s love of wood and craftsmanship. A walnut dining table (shown above) adds richness to the kitchen, aligning with its natural aesthetic. Their former alder kitchen table now serves as a bench in the front entry (shown at left), stained to match the Provence flooring.

JOHNNY: Being a wood guy, you can see i have an appreciation. We replaced the kitchen table with a walnut table. Actually our old kitchen table is now the bench in our front entry. It’a alder, so I cut it up and stained the alder to match the CRAFT Provence colour.

Johnny’s daughter, now a successful interior designer, also played a role in shaping the home’s aesthetic.

JOHNNY: We worked with my daughter and a kitchen designer. Modern-day renderings are amazing—it really helped us visualize everything!

JOHNNY: When we decided we were going to do the renovation, we had no idea of the effect the flooring would have on the overall look. We do a lot of entertaining. People walk in our front door, and the first thing they say is, ‘Oh wow, I love your flooring!’ Everybody. It’s amazing.

It’s also all the little things in the design, like they put in switch plates with no screws. It’s such a simple item, but it looks so clean.

This attention to detail and functional elegance is evident in the clean, unbroken surfaces of the cabinetry, the precision of the flooring’s micro-beveled edges, and the subtle grain patterns of the wood, and all contribute to the home’s modern sophistication. The materials work in harmony to create a cohesive and balanced environment.

The drop test:

As someone with a professional background in wood, Johnny understands the importance of choosing authentic materials, that stand up to use; and age gracefully.

JOHNNY: We used to have a maple floor, and when the remote controls were dropped, it would dent the floor. This flooring? We’ve dropped remote controls, and nothing. The durability of this white oak is amazing.

When it came to selecting CRAFT as a manufacturer, it’s also great that you provide the whole suite of accessories such as the stair nosing.

JOHNNY: It’s a white oak finish, and we chose a waterfall design for the countertop with the appearance of a 2-inch thickness. The design is very simple—even the cooktop has a clean, minimalist look. The grain runs through the cabinetry, and even the little knobs light up as you turn them on. It’s all the little things.
